Start planning your move 2 months in advance. Create a moving binder, folder or doc to keep track of all important paperwork, estimates and reminders.
Ensure utilities are set up in your name before you move. This can save you money on your first bill and prevent any issues once you move.
1. Packing
The first step in any move is to pack up your belongings. Depending on how much you have to do, this could take a few days or weeks. Start by packing things that aren’t essential or are rarely used. This includes winter coats, off-season clothing and books. Consider having a garage sale or giving items away to friends and neighbors.
Gather packing supplies, like boxes (a variety of sizes), tape, markers and baggies. Also, make sure you have a space to keep these materials organized as you pack. It will be a lot easier to grab a piece of tape when you need it if everything isn’t spread out all over the house.
Label all of your boxes as you go, both for yourself and the movers. You should write the contents on the sides of each box and also mark any boxes as fragile. Don’t forget to include a First-Day Box for your essentials like toiletries and clothes.
2. Cleaning
Cleaning is one of the most important tasks to complete before you start unpacking and settling into your new home. Forgetting to do these crucial tasks will only increase your stress levels and delay the process of getting a true feel for your new place.
Whether you’re moving out of an apartment or a house, it is essential to give the space a deep clean before moving out. This helps ensure you get your security deposit back from your landlord, or that you leave the house in a good condition for the new owners.
To make the cleaning process easier, we’ve created a downloadable checklist. This includes all the important tasks you need to do before you move out of an apartment or house. It also includes tips on cleaning your appliances, like the refrigerator and oven. This will help you avoid leaving behind lingering odors or sticky spills.
3. Utilities
One of the most important tasks in preparing to move from an apartment to a house is transferring utilities. This includes services like water, electricity, gas, trash removal, cable and internet. When transferring these utilities, it is best to give the service providers as much notice as possible. This is to ensure that they can shut off the services at your old apartment and set up services in your new home on a day that is convenient for you.
It is also wise to research the utility companies that operate in your new area and contact them for a transfer or installation date. You may have to provide a utility company with your current address, name, social security number or other personal information as proof of identity when you establish an account. This can be a tedious task but is important for making the transition to your new home smooth and quick. This will also help prevent any unexpected charges on your bill.
4. Moving Day
Whether you’re hiring movers or taking on the task yourself, moving day can be a bit hectic. To make it as stress-free as possible, be sure to get up early and clear a path for those helping you move. It’s also a good idea to strip your bedding and have clean linens ready for the new home so that you can sleep well on your first night there.
Before the movers arrive, conduct one last walk-through of the house to ensure that you haven’t forgotten anything important. Also, make sure to leave behind warranty information and instruction manuals for appliances and electrical devices.
If you’re planning on using a reputable moving company in Nassau County, be sure to confirm the date and time of your move with them well in advance. Then be sure to let any regular service providers – such as the cleaning and landscaping services of your current home – know that you’re moving. This will save you the hassle of having to remind them on moving day.
