While it’s exciting to be moving into a new apartment, this also comes with a lot of work. From having to figure out everything from the administrative side to actually handling the physical part of your move, any move to a new place can be a lot to deal with. And unfortunately, it doesn’t even end once you get into your new space.

With apartments, you can never really know who lived there before you or how well they cared for and cleaned the space. Because of this, it’s wise to give your new apartment a good scrub down before you start getting too comfortable, regardless of whether you’re moving into an apartment you’re buying or a senior living apartment.

Start With Your Appliances

When you first have access to your new apartment, the best place to start with cleaning is your appliances. 

For most people, cleaning the appliances isn’t part of their normal cleaning routine. Because of this, you’re going to want to make sure that the appliances that you’ll be using are thoroughly cleaned before you start to use them. And since you’re likely going to want to begin using things like the refrigerator and washing machine very soon after moving in, you’ll want to get these things cleaned first. 

Move From The Top, Down

Once you’re ready to move onto cleaning the rest of your new apartment, it’s wise to start at the top of the property and move your way down. 

When you clean in this manner, you’ll be sure not to have to reclean certain things over again as they become dirty from the work of cleaning. If you clean the floors first, you might have to clean them again as debris falls from countertops and walls while you clean. But if you start at the top and work your way down to the ground, you won’t ever have to go over your same tracks again. 

Focus On Areas You May Not Normally Clean

For daily or weekly cleaning, there are likely certain areas that you spend more time on. So when you’re moving into a new place for the first time, you’re going to want to try to focus on areas that might not get this same attention all of the time. For example, people generally don’t clean their walls, blinds, or baseboards on a daily or weekly basis. So to make sure these start off clean when you move into your new apartment, be sure to give these areas a good scrub before you begin putting pictures on the walls and pushing furniture into its final resting place.
